As we ventured out on our afternoon safari in Pumba Private Game Reserve—a vast reserve spanning roughly 7,000 hectares—we set out with one clear goal: to find the elusive white lion.

For hours, we crossed the reserve from one end to the other, moving through rolling plains, dense bush, and rocky hills. The light softened as the afternoon slipped toward evening, and with every passing moment, the chances of finding him seemed to fade.

But just as we reached the far edge of the park, high up on a mountain ridge, we finally saw him.

It was already 19:40—far from ideal conditions for photography. The last light of day clung faintly to the landscape, casting long shadows and muting the colors around us. Still, none of that mattered. We had found him.

Sensing the moment, our ranger skillfully navigated a hidden track leading up the mountain. As we climbed, the anticipation grew. And there, at the top, we found not just the white lion—but also his lioness beside him. For a brief moment, everything felt perfectly still.

Then, almost as quickly as we had found them, the male began to descend the mountain. What followed took us by surprise—a strange and fascinating exchange between the two. As he moved down, the lioness responded with calls, and he answered in return. Back and forth, their voices carried across the landscape in what felt like a powerful, almost intimate dialogue.

It was a rare and unexpected moment—less about the perfect photograph, and more about witnessing something raw and real in the fading light of the African wilderness.
